If you’re in the mood for some nostalgic American food with a vegan twist, Stand-Up Burgers is your place! There are 2 locations in Chicago, one on North Wells Street and one on West Diversey Parkway.
I visited the one on North Wells Street and I was not disappointed. Stand-Up Burgers is a counter-serve type restaurant. The dining area is smallish with about 8-10 tables, but spaced out nicely. The restaurant is clean and inviting. You can just come in, place your order, and find a seat or take your food to go. You can also order online for pick-up, or eat your online order in the dining room.
The restaurant opens at 11am and closes at 9pm. We arrived around 1130am on a Saturday. It was not too busy. We ordered right away and took a seat by the window. I got the chili dog and my husband got the Tex-Mex Burger. We got an order of chili cheese fries to share too! Yes, I’m a huge chili fan.
Since the restaurant happened to have Hamm’s beer on display right on the counter, we decided to get that too. I mean, how can you not? I haven’t seen that beer in ages.
Chili Dog!
Speaking of the chili dog-it was so satisfying! As you can see, it came with a poppyseed bun! That is so old school-and delightful! Both the hotdog and the bun were grilled.
They use a Field-Roast hot dog and house-made chili then smother it with dijon mustard. The hot dog was good, although a little dry. But the fact that it was covered in chili made it just right. I also like the addition of the dijon mustard on top. If you’re not a fan of mustard, just ask them to leave it off. You can even add spicy queso if you want!
Tex Mex Burger!
My husband’s Tex-Mex burger was also really tasty. It is an Impossible burger with spicy queso, lettuce, guacamole, tomato, and ketchup. My husband did not like the addition of ketchup and forgot to ask them to remove it, but he still thought the burger was good. I also enjoyed the burger but agree, the ketchup with queso is kind of an odd combination.
The good thing is, all of the menu items are customizable so make sure to cater to your own taste buds!
The Chili Cheese Fries!
My husband and I both agreed that the chili cheese fries were the best part of the meal! I could eat that chili by itself, it was so good! They give you a pretty generous serving of fries, topped with chili, spicy queso, and green onion. Fork required! These fries were just like I remember from the standard chili cheese fries-but better!
Other Menu Items
I would have liked to sample everything on the menu but of course, my stomach would not agree with that! I didn’t even have room for a shake or float, which I hear are fabulous by the way!
